For those of you that disconnected during Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, New Year, etc… Welcome back. Here’s a summary of the most interesting social media and mobile news I read in the last few weeks:
Apple:
- 1/6/09: At Macworld….
- Apple announced tiered pricing for songs on iTunes that allows record labels to charge higher amounts for more popular songs… Their new pricing scheme, which will launch in April will offer songs at 69 cents, 99 cents, or $1.29. When I heard this, I couldn’t help but think of the old Taco Bell commercials of the early 1990s… “.59, .79, .99” I know record labels need to make a buck, but I’m more inclined to pay $1.29 for a taco than I am for a new song on iTunes.
- On a happier note, songs will finally be DRM free and 256 Kbps AAC by the end of Q1. Today, iTunes store has 8 million DRM-free songs. By the end of March, they’ll have 10 million.
- And, if you’ve got an iPhone 3G, you’ll be able to download songs directly to your iPhone over the 3G network, and the songs will sync between your computer and your phone….Ahhh… Finally!
- In FY 2008, Apple sold 9.7 million Macs, and Mac sales increased at two times the rate of the overall PC market.
- The new version of iPhoto within iLife will have facial recognition software, which allows you to pick photos of a specific friend from your album without a text tag. And, iPhoto will be Facebook and Flickr compatible!
- 1/5/09: Steve Jobs told the world that his recent rapid weight loss is due to a hormone imbalance and not a return of pancreatic cancer.
Facebook:
- 1/2/09: Facebook sued Brazilian start-up Power.com for trademark and copyright infringement, violation of the computer fraud and abuse act, and unlawful competition. Facebook’s complain states that Power.com “is offering a product that solicits, stores and uses Facebook login information to access information stored on Facebook computers without authorization and to display Facebook copyrighted material without permission.” You can read the NY Times article that describes the suit here.
- 12/31/08: Proving that the “blue screen of death” is alive and well, Microsoft’s 2006 30GB model Zune experienced a massive failure on the last day of 2008, and users were not amused. The bug appears to have been fixed, though users are still unhappy about it.
Twitter:
- 1/5/09: Twitter was hacked over the weekend, and 33 high profile accounts were hijacked. There was also a separate phishing scam through the direct message capability. You can learn more about it on Twitter’s blog.
UIQ:
- 1/5/09: Symbian partner, UIQ filed for bankruptcy.
Verizon:
- 1/5/09: BusinessWeek reports that “The $5.9 billion acquisition of cellular carrier Alltel Corp. by Verizon Wireless will close on Jan. 9”. This will mean that Verizon trumps AT&T as the largest US mobile operator with ~ 78 million subscribers.
Xobni:
1/5/09: Xobni (inbox spelled backwards), the company behind a very cool outlook plug-in that turns your email inbox into a social network, announced $7M in Series B funding from new investor Cisco Systems and Xobni’s existing investors.
Layoffs:
1/6/09: Clearspring, which plays in the widget distribution space laid off 20% of its workforce in early December, and their President/COO, Jay Rappaport is leaving.
Misc. Social Media & Mobile News:
- I just learned about Twtpoll, which lets you poll your Twitter followers. Looks like a great idea if you’re a brand that wants feedback from its community of users.
- 1/1/09: California passed a no-text messaging while driving rule, which became legal on Jan 1. I can’t help but wonder how it can be illegal to text while driving, and yet, it’s perfectly okay to fiddle with your radio, AC, or GPS. Not that I’m advocating texting while driving. It just seems like an inane law, given the many distracting things you could be doing while driving.
- 1/3/09 The 1.0 version of a Firefox add-on called Power Twitter launched, allowing “search, search scoped to a specific user, status history peeking on mouseover, Facebook status updates, inline YouTube, Flickr, and TwitPic, url expansion, url translation to page titles, and open web update (news feed) mapping.” It sounds interesting to me and gets good reviews, but I’ve heard a few complaints from people I follow on Twitter, so I’m waiting until the next release.

- 12/31/08: TechCrunch has an interesting article on the rise of Y-Combinator, start-up Scribd. Scribd allows users to post and share documents online. TechCrunch reports: “According to the comScore numbers, it has more unique visitors worldwide than imeem and almost as many as Bebo, with 23.5 million visitors in November, 2008. (In the U.S., it had about 4 million visitors).” And, Scribd grew “218 percent from November, 2007. Pretty incredible stats for a company that initially only raised $300,000! “
- 12/31/08 The UK loves watching the TV show “Big Brother,” and rumor has it, they may be forced to live a frightening real-life version of it in the future. The Guardian reports,
“The private sector will be asked to manage and run a communications database that will keep track of everyone's calls, emails, texts and internet use under a key option contained in a consultation paper to be published next month by Jacqui Smith, the home secretary.
A cabinet decision to put the management of the multibillion pound database of all UK communications traffic into private hands would be accompanied by tougher legal safeguards to guarantee against leaks and accidental data losses.”Even though the report hasn’t yet been published, critics of its rumored contents are speaking out against it including Sir Ken Macdonald, the former director of public prosecutions.
- 12/31/08: Obama’s Change.gov site is getting great use. According to TechCrunch, “more than 74,031 people have submitted more than 53,369 questions (and counting) for his administration and voted 3,122,015 times to prioritize the questions in a Digg-like fashion.” You can see the top list of questions here.
- 12/30/08: Hitwise reported 3 interesting holiday social media trends in the UK:
- “Facebook accounts for 1 in 22 UK Internet visits on Christmas Day”
- "Video site YouTube received more UK Internet traffic than Microsoft Windows Live Mail (Hotmail) for the first time during Christmas week 2008.”
- “social networks accounted for 1 in every 10 UK Internet visits during Christmas week.”
- 12/26/08: Amazon.com announced it’s best Christmas season ever with “6.3 million items ordered worldwide on the peak day, Dec. 15, which is a record-breaking 72.9 items per second.”
- 12/15/08: BusinessWeek reports that Palm will launch its new Nova OS at CES. After several layoffs, many ups and downs over the years, I find it amusing that they decided to name it Nova (“no va” means “no go” in Spanish.) Chevrolet learned how disastrous that name could be when it launched the Chevy Nova years ago. I’m not sure if this was lost on Palm’s marketing team, if it was an inside joke, or if they knew about it and decided to buck tradition and go with the name anyway. I love Palm, and I’m keeping fingers crossed they find a way to make this work. I think it’ll be tough in to re-gain developers’ trust after several false starts in recent years.
Everyone in marketing is talking about “social media” these days. I’d be tempted to add the term “Social Media” to my “bullshit bingo” card, except that as you can probably tell from my previous blog posts, I like social media. In 2007, developing an effective Social Media strategy is an important part of developing a successful and multi-pronged marketing strategy. The problem is that with so many companies jumping on the “social media marketing bandwagon,” so quickly, marketing-focused social networking sites are running the risk of reaching saturation point, and many marketers are not taking the time to think strategically about how to use social media to their advantage.
There are many examples of social media marketing efforts that have reaped excellent results, but there are even more examples of such efforts that have gone awry, sucking valuable marketing dollars without having much impact. Yesterday, blogger Jerry Bowles wrote an interesting blog on FASTforward. In it, he discusses how corporations are using social media to capture new audiences. The article mentions successful uses of social media in corporate marketing like MyCoke.com and Carnival Connections as well as ineffective attempts like MyDream.tv by Lincoln and Ford Bold Moves. At the end of his blog, Bowles concludes:
“The major truth of corporate-sponsored social media campaigns is that no matter how good they are or how sensitive they are to the concerns of the “community,” they won’t improve the bottomline unless you have something to sell that people want.”
I couldn’t agree more with Bowles final comment. Adding to it, part of the problem with failed social media marketing campaigns is that they’re not well devised from the start. Let me explain…
There are two basic ways to employ a social media strategy:
Create a stand-alone social media site, or
Leverage existing social media sites to your company’s advantage (e.g. YouTube, MySpace, Friendster, Second Life, etc.).
In an ideal universe, before deciding which tactic to employ, companies should be very clear about the objective(s) of their social media marketing campaign. Many companies aren’t clear about their objectives, and I believe this is because:
- The “science” of social media is too new and largely undocumented/undefined and
- Companies who do not yet have a social media marketing strategy feel pressured to come up with something quickly, lest they fall behind the curve.
If the goal of employing a social media marketing strategy is to bolster enthusiasm for a specific product among a group that is already using that product, or expose existing customers/ enthusiasts a particular product to a new product from the same company, then developing a stand-alone social media site, like MyCoke.com, may make sense. However, before building a stand-alone social media site, a company must already have a very strong base of customer enthusiasts who like to talk about their experiences with products on-line (i.e.: Coke, Apple, Mini Cooper, etc.) and be ready to offer something materially different/ better than those users can get elsewhere. Creating a stand-alone social media site is an expensive endeavor, but if it is done correctly, for the right reasons, and targeted towards the right contingent, at the least, the likely result is increased web traffic to the company’s website. MyCoke.com and Carnival Connections (both mentioned in Bowles’ blog) are two good examples. Whether having a well used, stand-alone social media site translates to higher sales remains to be seen, but increased web traffic from customers can’t be a bad thing.
However, in a world where consumers are increasingly being bombarded with so many social media and social networking options, it is becoming increasingly difficult for companies to succeed in creating stand-alone social media marketing sites that have a sustainable and positive marketing impact and drive traffic. In my opinion, the safest option for marketers that are trying to attract the attention of prospective customers that are not yet familiar with their specific product, company, or brand, is piggybacking off of existing social media sites – like YouTube, Friendster, MySpace, Gather, Vox, Second Life, etc. to attract attention to their products/services. It helps to learn how to walk before you try to run.

I voted for Vox because I use it so often, but each of the nominees has its strengths. As I look at the list, I keep thinking that the old phrase "It's not where you are but who you're with" is as true in social networking as it is in life. While I've experimented with a lot of the above sites, I've wound up using Vox and LinkedIn because these are the two sites that I find the most useful for interacting with people who share similar interests.

Last week, San Francisco-based start-up Activeweave launched an exciting new product called Stickis. At first glance, Stickis looks like any other web overlay and annotation tool (i.e. Google Notebook, Trailfire, Fleck, Diigo, etc.), but dig a little deeper and you’ll see that Stickis does more. If it reaches critical mass, Stickis could revolutionize the way that people interact with the web and each other. Unlike popular social networking sites like MySpace, Friendster, Facebook, LinkedIn, Cyworld, etc., which require users to interact with each other within the confines of a specific website, Stickis allows users to interact with people in their network anytime and anywhere on the web.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with web overlay, traditional annotation tools have been around for a while. These tools are browser plug-ins that let you stick virtual Post-It-esque “notes” on websites. One of the first and most notorious of these web overlay services was the now defunct “Third Voice,” which many likened to “web graffiti”. One of the problems with Third Voice was that it lacked privacy features, which critics argued, exposed everyone with Third Voice’s plug-in to potentially lewd and libelous commentary. In 2001, reporting on the backlash to this criticism, Wired reported:
Web overlay/annotation tools have come a long way since the missteps of Third Voice. Since then, the web has seen significant technological advances – especially in the areas of privacy management, web search/organizing content, and social networking. Stickis incorporates several advanced features in these areas into a product that not only free but highly functional, innovative, and easy to use.Third Voice couldn't generate enough advertising revenue to raise consumers' awareness of its free service, and it couldn't generate enough consumer awareness to raise the advertising revenue it needed to stay in business.
One thing that makes Stickis different than its competitors is the way that the service is structured. Stickis is organized around “channels,” which are groups of Stickis notes published by a particular user. Anyone can set up a channel – a private individual, a blogger, an organization, a website, or a company. (Yelp and OpenTable San Francisco are two of the first companies to have Stickis channels.) Users can subscribe to new channels or unsubscribe from their existing channels at any time. Similarly, “channel” owners control the privacy of their content and are able to ensure which of their Stickis notes are shared with which of their subscribers.
Here’s how Stickis works today:
- Register at Stickis.com.
- Pick a nickname/ username
- Enter your email address
- Select the channels you’d like to subscribe to
- If you'd like to publish a channel, pick a name (mine is Socialmedia.vox.com)
- Set-up your privacy settings
- You choose whether you want to make your Stickis channel public or private. If you decide to make your channel public, you have control over which of your subscribers can see specific posts. You can organize your subscribers into groups- limiting which of your Stickis are seen by which of your subscribers. This is done by creating what Stickis calls “antisocial tags” http://www.stickis.com/settings/tags/
- Upon signing up, a small plug-in is downloaded to your computer and installed when you re-start your browser. This plug-in does NOT contain spy ware and can be turned on or off anytime with the touch of a button, which appears in your browser’s toolbar.
- When Stickis is “on”, anytime you go to new web page, a small, unobtrusive icon appears in the bottom right hand corner of your browser window. This button displays the number of Stickis notes that your subscribed “channels” have written about that web page.
- Unlike other annotation programs, Stickis notes are easily ignored if you don’t want to see them.
- If you want to open the Stickis notes on a page, simply click on the button in the lower right side of your browser, and a “tray” containing a summary of each Stickis note appears (listed in reverse chronological order).
- To get a closer look at a specific Stickis note, click on its summary in the “tray” and voila- the entire Stickis note appears as an overlay over the page you’re on.
- If you want to add to a Stickis note or reply to someone else’s Stickis note, just press the compose button on the “tray” or in your browser’s toolbar, and start writing.
- You can drag or drop URLs, Pictures, Icons, etc. into your Stickis notes.You can add ‘tags’ to each of your Stickis notes, facilitating easy searching. Similarly, you can add ‘antisocial tags’ to specific posts to ensure that only certain people see those posts.
- You can also customize the look and feel of your Stickis notes so that they reflect your personal style.
- You can set up alerts that notify you when:
- Your favorite channel posts a new Stickis note.
- Someone writes a Stickis note on a topic that interests you (e.g. notification when specific ‘tags’ are used).

It’s easy to imagine the different ways Stickis could be marketed…
- Individuals: Share your most / least favorite sites with your friends, family, the public, etc.
- Fans: Talk with fellow fans about all of the latest on-line gossip. Meet friends who are going to up-coming shows.
- Bloggers: Enhance your reader’s experience by cross-referencing websites that you’ve commented on.
- Blog readers: See what your favorite bloggers are saying about the sites you’ve visited.
- Marketers/ PR people (for products, bands, actors, etc.): Stickis is a great way to engage with the users who want to hear from you. Create your own channel and share exclusive information with your prospective and existing customers. Host contests, on-line scavenger hunts, and more.
- Teachers: Create different channels for each of the classes that you teach. Share relevant websites / on-line content with your students and encourage them to engage in discussions with each other about what they see on-line.
- Politicians: Reach out to your constituents and tell them what you think about what’s happening on-line. Engage your staff in a confidential discussion about how to address leaks, negative comments/ allegations that appear on the web.
Stickis has the potential to become a leading social networking tool. To succeed in this capacity, it must continue to evolve. Activeweave’s CEO, Marc Meyer, agrees:
Today we’re very much emphasizing the annotation features and the ability to discover stuff. In the near future, we’ll be improving people’s ability to connect more closely to their communities.

While sites like YouTube and many video search engines allow anyone to view videos, other sides like Grouper.com (based in Sausalito, CA and recently purchased by Sony) enable privacy settings. I also like Grouper because it allows members to add video to any website or their MySpace, Facebook, Y!360, Friendster, and Blogger pages. Plus, with Grouper, users can control privacy settings on specific videos so that they can't be seen by just anyone.
Privacy in video is important - not just because it allows users to control who sees them/ their video, but it also has the potential to give social media companies the ability to add revenue enhancing features to their sites and explore revenue based partnerships. I was thinking about this the other day with singshot.com, which is kind of like American Idol, but available on-line. Singshot provides karaoke-esque background instrumentals, and users sing along. The resulting tracks are posted on-line, and members of the public can vote on them and provide feedback. The downside with the site is that there is NO VIDEO! Depending on their subscriber numbers, if Singshot were to add video, they may have the potential for a whole new revenue model. They could continue to let any member of the public listen to and vote on audio tracks, but they could also offer a premium (paid for subscription service), enabling only those who pay to see, vote and comment on video. Alternatively, they could charge performers a subscription fee (which could include the cost of a webcam) to post video in order to get feedback on style, dance routines, etc.
In addition, to allowing personal privacy, social media "privacy" features are attractive to Mobile Operators, who want to differentiate themselves from their competition. Web-based Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) in the social media space who strive for mobile enablement should be thinking carefully about privacy. In my experience, mobile operators haven't yet seen the potential of social media to increase revenues and user bases. Therefore, it hasn't been a huge push for mobile enabled social media. This is changing. As this change happens, one thing is almost certain, the social media ISVs that win the mobile game will have thought about privacy. Mobile operators want to differentiate their service offerings from their competition, and in the social media world, one of the few ways to do that is by offering unique content. Social media ISVs don't want to make custom versions of their software for every OEM and Mobile operator out there because doing so limits the number of users that can interact, which defeats the usefuleness and viral spread of social media - especially social networking AND, it increases the amount of work that goes into software development and maintenance. I think the way to get around this is through privacy.
By having different privacy settings, users on different mobile networks would be able to see different premium content and features than those on other networks - say videos, etc.. This would mean that members of the "public" would still be able to access specific sites, but they may not be able to "see" or "do" certain "premium" things from their mobile phone without being a "subscriber" to a particular mobile operator or have a particular type of mobile phone. I'm not advocating segmenting the market in this way, but doing so may be one way to grab the mobile market, which is difficult to penetrate without carrier buy-in. In my experience, the only way to get mobile operator buy-in is by guarenteeing increased revenue (through increased subscribers and paid-for software/subscription opportunities).
