Last year, I wrote a post with predictions for mobile in 2007 and beyond, using inCode's "Top 10 Global Wireless Predictions for 2007"
as a starting point. We're almost 2 months into 2008, and it's the perfect time to re-visit those predictions to see what came true, and make a few more predictions for 2008 and beyond.
Topping both InCode's and my own predictions for 2007 was the mobilization of social networks. To date, while social networks aren't nearly as mobile as I'd like, they're taking big strides and moving in the right direction. In October 2007, Dustin Moskovitz (co-founder of Facebook) spoke at CTIA in San Francisco on the importance of mobilizing social applications and announced Facebook's first mobile application (for RIM). And, in one of the most exciting things to happen since I started blogging, Dustin Moskovitz read my post expressing disappointment about Facebook's mobile announcement and solicited my input on how to improve Facebook's mobile strategy and WAP site.
In other exciting mobile social networking news in 2007, ShoZu (one of my consulting clients), who makes it easy for users to interact with their favorite social networking sites from their phone, was nominated for a TechCrunch Crunchies Award. And, in early 2008, ShoZu announced that ShoZu will ship on 50 Million Mobile phones in 2008, the number of users downloading the app from non-pre-installed phones is doubling quarterly, and 100,000 users are registering for ShoZu every month! With stats like that, it's clear that mobile OEMs and Operators are buying into the mobile social networking proposition, and users are embracing mobile social networking in droves. Mobile social networking on the whole will continue to increase in popularity in 2008, and mobile accessibility will improve dramatically, as mobile browsers and social media apps get better.
inCode also predicted that in 2007, "Multi-Function Devices [will] Become Cheaper and More Versatile" - including the introduction of video-capable, GPS-enabled, and LBS-capable devices to the masses. Video-capable devices are definitely here to stay. GPS-enabled devices haven't saturated the market, but LBS is taking off. Google Maps recently incorporated LBS via network triangulation, and while triangulation isn't nearly as accurate as GPS, it's still very useful. It's great to see carriers like AT&T opening up triangulation to allow mobile internet technologies to leverage LBS.
A year ago, I predicted that in 2008, "large mobile operators and OEMs will begin to pre-load devices with social networking-focused applications that incorporate GPS." It seems that mobile operators are moving in the right direction, based on several new product announcements at the World Mobile Congress in Barcelona earlier this month. OEMs like Nokia and Sony Eriksson are jumping on the GPS bandwagon in 2008 with innovative handsets with built-in GPS and designs that rival the iPhone. Once GPS technology is more readily available on slimmer handsets, the influx of GPS-enabled social applications will come. By 2009, interacting with friends from your mobile phone and locating people near you so that you can interact with them in real life will get easier thanks to new GPS enabled handsets and apps.
Last year, I also predicted: "collaborative and community-based entertainment like YouTube
on the go will evolve and continue to be popular. I also expect that
sites that monetize video footage (of, say, news events) that users
take on their mobile phones will become increasingly popular....Think
sites like: ScoopLive.com
, Scoopt.com
, and SpyMedia.com
." So far, I've been right on YouTube, but monetization from video is still a long way off. Check out the lack of traffic on the above sites according to Alexa!:
Given the current economic downturn in the US, I don't suspect we'll see much movement in the paid-for citizen journalism space until 2009. And, by that point, there will probably be a whole new set of competitors. More likely, I suspect we'll see Video AdSense from Google (just released from beta) and similar video ad platforms make their way towards mobile and start picking up momentum towards the end of the year and into 2009 as mobile advertising revs up.
With an increased amount of mobile content becoming available and more ISVs and websites trying to monetize their mobile efforts through advertising, the discoverability of mobile content needs to improve. So, I'm sticking with my original prediction from 2007 that later in 2008, mobile search and mobile SEO will gain momentum. Mobile ads will gain some momentum later this year but won't likely take off until 2009. By that point, there will be a need to track the effectiveness of mobile ads, and by 2009, I suspect we'll see an increase number of mobile analytics vendors like Bango and Mobilytics emerge. From there, it's only a matter of time before the heavy hitters in website optimization and testing incorporate mobile website testing and optimization tools into their product suites.
It's an exciting time to be in both mobile and web 2.0, and 2008 and 2009 will be exciting years for both industries as convergence moves further away from a dream and towards a reality.
Today at 3GSM in Barcelona, ShoZu Inc., an emerging leader in the mobile social networking space, announced the addition of some great new LBS feature enhancements for GPS-enabled mobile phonw. According to the press release:
Share-It one-click image uploading service now offers location tagging for photos and video clips sent from GPS-enabled phones to Flickr and YouTube as well as Buzznet, Dada.net, moblogUK, Pikeo and Textamerica. ShoZu is the only upload service that provides automatic geotagging for cameraphone uploads to more than one Internet destination. It also supports more GPS handsets than any other provider...The new location tag capability applies to all ShoZu web destinations that support tagging. ShoZu also enables users to upload images to sites without tagging including photo sharing communities Kodak EasyShare Gallery, MSN�s Windows Live Spaces and Webshots; personal blogging sites Blogger, TypePad and WordPress; citizen-contributed photojournalism sites CNN, the BBC and Scoopt; and any FTP or email address. ShoZu continues to add new sites on a regular basis.
While I find ShoZu's announcement exciting, it will be a while before most of us can take advantage of this capability. Most mobile phones in the US (including my Treo 750) are not GPS enabled. I hope that this will change in the coming years (GPS enabled phones are certainly becoming more popular). However, in the meantime, I'll have to do things the old fashioned way - manually (which is painful). The good news is that once GPS becomes ubiquitous, automatic geotagging and LBS services will be the norm. ShoZu's announcement forshadows some of the exciting things mobile social media enthusiasts have to look forward to.
Thanks to technology and the Internet, the world is becoming increasingly transparent and accessible. Social media is playing an important role in this transformation. So far, most people seem to be responding to the power of social media favorably, and they’re using the power of social media for good. However, there is a risk that the pendulum could shift in the other direction over time. Below are the "5 Deadly Sins" of social media - pitfalls that proponents of social media should watch out for and proactively advocate against:
- Market saturation: There is a proliferation of social networking sites available – lots of sites are competing for users time. Marketers are creating new social networking sites in record numbers to promote their products, and the number of traditional social networking sites (MySpace, YouTube, Bebo, Gather, WAYN, CyWorld, etc.) are also growing. Users often use different for the same purpose but to meet different people. If the market becomes overly fragmented, it may become less useful and more burdensome to user. I hope that a natural market consolidation will happen eventually, but in the meantime, the industry runs the risk of users “burning out” from having to juggle too many different websites, on-line “friends”, different profile inputting tools, and passwords.
- Exploitation of social media at the expense of others: Social media makes it easier than ever to share information on-line. While, the power of information sharing is good, it can also be dangerous in the wrong hands, enabling: fraud, misrepresentation of identity, identity theft, sexual exploitation, and unethical sharing of corporate or government secrets. I just read an interesting article on the security risk that social media presents to corporations. The same is true for governments and individuals. The “Star Wars Kid” and Paris Hilton were two of the first people to learn a thing or two about that.
- Eradication of privacy: This one is closely linked to the bullet point above on exploitation, but I felt it deserved its own section because it goes beyond exploitation because what is considered private to one person, isn’t necessarily considered private to another. The Washingtonienne case is a good example of this. Another example is that anyone can get an aerial photograph of your house at Google Maps or go to Zillow to find out what your house is worth. Add location based social media services and mobile phones into the mix, and tracking people's location becomes easy via services like Helio's Buddy Beacon and Dodgeball. While these are great services and they offer opt-in privacy, it's scary to think what could happen if either service were hacked. Alternatively, imagine the damage that would result if someone's location information got into the wrong hands or was commandeered by a "friend" turned stalker.
- Opportunistic litigation: Lawsuits like those filed earlier this week against News Corp. pose a strong threat to the health of social media. If cases like these succeed, the rulings will send a dangerous message to the public: “You’re not responsible for your own safety or the safety of your children. Someone else is.” Unjustified lawsuits also stifle technical innovation and have the potential to strangle social media with excessive amounts of red tape.
- Opaque Marketing: Marketers are becoming more sophisticated about the ways that they use social media to their advantage. It is already difficult to avoid pop-ups and other advertisements on-line. And, with some social media sites, it difficult to tell what is advertising versus what is genuine, unbiased opinion. Take, for example, bloggers who get paid by companies to evangelize products (I don’t, but a lot do). Advertising on social media sites isn’t nearly as transparent as it should be, and social media runs the risk of being tarnished by overzealous marketers.
1/22/07 UPDATE: Thanks everyone for your insightful comments. I just read a great article by Mark Zielinski, a UK-based security engineer. The article talks about the threat that social media poses to corporate security. In the article, Mark talks about how employees use their work computers to check their social networking pages and that this poses a threat to corporate networks. Unsurprisingly, employees checking social media sites rather than doing work probably, has an impact on productivity - even more so than personal email. With these two points in mind, I'd like to add "Bringing Down the Corporation" as the 6th deadly sin of Social Media.
